using a framework and a bug tracker

Postby justinrandell » 28 Jun 2008 18:16

hi all,

posting this here at the request of oliver.

below is a the text of an email i sent to oliver and his reply.

on using something like the zend framework or ez components - they are just examples. have you worked with other sets of php components, like PEAR etc?

on the bugtracker, fair enough, i'm happy to keep posting to the forum. just wanted to let you know that not having a bugtracker setup can hinder people's willingness to get more involved in the project.

cheers
justin

Hi Justin

thanks for the message.
I have never worked with either of the networks you mentioned. So I guess the overall workload would be quite high for me, and I am not sure if I have the time to do that.
Regarding the bug tracker: I do not want to setup another software or use external services as long as the forum is not used to a level that shows I need it.
If you look at the forum and the frequency of posts you will see that its not really causing heavy traffic.

If you do not mind I would be happy if you post to the forum so that others can see the questions and answers, too.

hi,

i've posted a couple times here

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=40

just wanted to say feel free to ping me at
<deleted>

or via the IM details i've put in my profile.

to be honest, my first thoughts about the project as a whole are:

nice work, would you consider:

- basing most of the code on something like the zend framework or ez
components?

- using a bug tracker?

thanks for the nice software.
justin

Thanks for posting this here.
I have been working with PEAR, but not very extensively. If you see portions of my code you want to propose to be converted to PEAR, I would be happy to take a look at it.

Regarding the bug tracker, I agree it would be nice to have one. Is there some small package that runs on php/mysql that you know thats not too big of a pain to install? I am quite reluctant to use external services too much. A plugin for PHPBB would be best of course.... I could not find something like that though...

If it really has to be PHP/mysql only, maybe http://flyspray.org/. I'm really more of a redmine user, though it's based on ruby on rails.

As a developer, I can't really live without a bug tracker and project manager, don't really know how someone can :D

well if you look at the frequency of postings here you will see its really not hat much.
Unless I have more traffic, having another system to maintain or watch is just not really worth it.
